Kottarakkara: The MBBS degree, which was posthumously awarded to Dr. Vandana Das, who was murdered while on duty at Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital, should be considered a posthumous honour, informed the Kerala government.

Earlier, Dr. K. Prathibha, a resident of Kulathoor, Thiruvananthapuram, had petitioned the president to honour Vandana posthumously. The president’s office forwarded the petition to the Kerala Chief Secretary, who was asked to take appropriate action.

In response, Kerala Health Sciences University announced that Vandana has been awarded the MBBS degree as a posthumous honour.

Vandana was attacked and killed in the emergency department of Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital on May 10, 2023, at around 4:30 a.m. The accused, Sandeep, who was brought to the hospital by the police for treatment, became violent and attacked Dr Vandana with surgical scissors.

Prathibha submitted her petition on May 17, 2023, pointing out the impact of Vandana's death on both the public and health workers. She argued that Vandana deserved a fitting posthumous honour for being killed while performing his duties.

While the central and state governments typically announce awards on Independence Day, Prathibha hoped that Vandana would be included in these honours. The government's response has been to recognise the MBBS degree from Health Sciences University as a form of posthumous recognition for Vandana's service and sacrifice. Vandana was awarded the degree on August 2, 2023.
