Thrissur: The central government has banned 156 drug compounds widely used across India, including Kerala. This ban affects a range of medications, including antibiotics, pain relievers, multivitamins, and medications for conditions such as infections, fungal infections, fever, and stomach issues.

Drug compounds are combinations of multiple drugs. While there are only about 25 compounds recognised globally, over a thousand are available in the Indian market. The new ban follows recommendations from an expert committee appointed by the Supreme Court. Previously, around 350 medicines have been banned, and now an additional 156 are being added to the list.

The newly banned list includes several multivitamins. The expert committee has identified that many of these banned drugs could potentially harm the kidneys. The ban officially took effect on August 12, the date the notification was issued. The use of 50 mg aceclofenac and 125 mg paracetamol in both liquid and tablet forms for children is also now prohibited.
