Thiruvananthapura/Kochi: On Saturday, hospitals and medical colleges across Kerala experienced disruptions in non-emergency medical services, including OPDs, as doctors and nurses protested the rape and murder of a resident doctor at a Kolkata hospital.

The strike followed a call from the Indian Medical Association (IMA) for a 24-hour nationwide withdrawal of non-emergency services, starting from 6 am on August 17.

The IMA has demanded a comprehensive improvement in the working and living conditions of resident doctors and a central law to protect healthcare professionals from violence.

Doctors gathered outside medical institutions, including the General Hospital in Ernakulam, holding signs and banners to demand justice for the victim and better safety measures for healthcare workers. Many patients were told to return on Monday due to the strike.

Emergency and casualty services continued as usual. The murdered doctor’s body was discovered on August 9, and a civic volunteer has been arrested in connection with the case. The Calcutta High Court has ordered the CBI to investigate the crime.
