Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is set to crack down on unauthorised buildings with the introduction of the Digi Door PIN system. This new system will assign a digital number to every building, providing key details such as the building's owner and its location. The Digi Door PIN is designed to be a permanent identifier, helping authorities pinpoint unauthorised constructions. The total number of buildings in Kerala will also be accurately determined.

The Digi Door PIN system will enable authorities to identify unauthorised buildings that do not have proper permits, as all buildings will be geotagged. Unofficial estimates suggest there are around 1 lakh unauthorised buildings in Kerala, including houses. With each building receiving a Digi Door PIN, these structures will be easily identified and brought into the legal fold. This will also help local governments recover taxes from previously unregistered buildings.
Total number of buildings in Kerala
Currently, there are 1.56 crore approved buildings in Kerala, which includes both residential homes and flats. As part of the Digi Door PIN initiative, all of these buildings will be assigned new numbers. The numbering system will also count each flat individually, leading to an increase in the total number of buildings.
