Kozhikode: The prices of essential vegetables in Kerala have seen a sharp rise, with some items witnessing a dramatic increase. On Wednesday, the price of drumstick at certain wholesale vegetable markets surged to Rs 320 per kilogram, a fivefold increase from Rs 62 on October 10. Other daily-use vegetables like tomatoes, carrots, cabbage, and brinjal have also seen a massive hike in prices.

Tomatoes, which were priced at Rs 28 per kg on November 25, have increased to Rs 44, with a rise of Rs 16. The prices of daily-use vegetables such as carrots, beetroot, cabbage, ivy gourd (Kovakka), cucumber, vellari (Madras cucumber), White pumpkin, curry leaves, and brinjal have also gone up. Wholesale prices for many of these vegetables have risen steeply and retail prices are expected to be even higher.

Reasons behind price hike

Traders attribute the price increase to several factors. The Sabarimala pilgrimage (Mandalam) season, which typically leads to higher demand for vegetables in South India, has contributed to a shortage in supply. The recent cyclonic weather and heavy rains in Tamil Nadu, caused by low-pressure systems, also have damaged crops and further disrupted supply chains.
