Crimes, accidents involving use of airguns increase in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: The rate of crimes and accidents associated with the use of airguns is increasing at an alarming pace in Kerala.

The seemingly harmless airguns, used primarily to fend off birds and animals without harming them, have now become a source of headache for many. So far this year, the use of air guns has resulted in six incidents and three fatalities.

If you need to buy an airgun, you only need to produce a copy of your Identification Certificate. However, a person requires a licence to purchase firearms. Unfortunately, there has been growing concern regarding the sale of firearms under the guise of airguns.

Airguns are accessible in online markets. A person can buy an airgun for as low as Rs 250 or up to Rs 25,000. Experts warn that pellets used in airguns could pose a danger if shot from a distance as close as 10 metres. 

Recently, a High Court staff member used an airgun to kill his brother in Aluva. A person lost his life during a quarrel between friends in Changaramkulam, Malappuram, after the accused resorted to using an airgun. Last year, five fatalities were reported in the state involving the air guns.
