Toronto: A shooting near the popular Salsa on St Clair festival in Toronto, Canada, left two people dead and six others injured on Saturday evening, prompting a major police response and an active search for the gunman.

According to Toronto Police, officers responded to reports of multiple people being shot at around 8:12 pm local time near St Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue, an area known for its restaurants, shops and the annual street festival.

Police confirmed that five victims with gunshot wounds were found at the scene. Two were pronounced dead, while three others were injured. Authorities have not yet released details about the victims or the severity of the injuries sustained by those who survived.

Following the incident, Toronto Police secured the area and urged residents and visitors to stay away while investigators continued gathering evidence. In a statement posted on X, the force said: "Please avoid the area immediately and follow all directions from police."

Investigators also confirmed that the suspect had fled the scene and remained at large at the time of the latest update. A large police presence continued throughout the area as officers searched for the attacker and examined the crime scene.

The shooting occurred during the Salsa on St Clair festival, a well-known cultural event that attracts large crowds each year. Authorities have not yet disclosed a possible motive or whether the victims were specifically targeted.
