Mundakayam (Idukki, Kerala): It was a Hindu wedding, with all its familiar rituals. But one moment stood out quietly — a Christian priest stepped in as the bride’s father and handed her over to the groom.

The wedding was of Sreekutty (Parvathi), who grew up at the Bethleham Ashram in Vandanpathal.

Parvathi had been brought to the care facility established for marginalized women and children when she was just one year old. From then on, she was cared for by Fr Roy Mathew, who runs the institution. Over the years, he came to see her as his own. He fondly called her ‘Sreekutty’.

A father’s place, taken with care

When the time came for her marriage, it was Fr Roy who took the initiative to arrange everything.

At the ceremony, he performed the role usually reserved for the bride’s father. He held her hand and entrusted her to the groom — a simple act, but an important part of the ritual. Later, he described it as the most fulfilling moment of his priesthood.

The wedding was held at St Paul’s Church parish hall in Vandanpathal. Ananthu, a native of Kattappana, tied the thali around Parvathi’s neck.

A ‘Shanthi’ was present to conduct the Hindu rituals. As per custom, it is the father who gives the bride away. This time, that role was taken by Fr Roy.

Fr Roy Mathew is a native of Peruvanthanam in Idukki. He also serves as a member of the Orphanage Control Board.
