Kochi: Bihar native Ashfaq Alam, who allegedly kidnapped the 5-year-old girl in Aluva on Friday, killed and dumped the child in the Aluva market, police said on Saturday.

The child's body was recovered from the waste-dumping area in the market on Saturday. The child, the daughter of Bihar couple residing in a rented apartment in Choornikkara panchayat, was found missing on Friday at 3 pm.

The girl's body was discovered by some workers 21 hours after she went missing. Police had initiated a search and sought help from citizens to find her.

CCTV footage from the area revealed that the child was last seen with Ashfaq. When Ashfaq was taken into custody on Friday, he was in an inebriated condition and they couldn’t get much from him. Later, when he came to his senses, he told police that he had handed over the child to a friend. However, police questioned the friend and they realised that Ashfaq was lying about it, sources said.

After kidnapping the child, he bought her juice from a nearby shop. The shop owner confirmed this. Later, he crossed the railway track and caught a bus to reach the Aluva bus stand. There is CCTV footage to confirm this. However, there is no clarity on what happened later. Police said it was unclear what is the reason for the child's death. They are questioning Ashfaq.

The five-year-old was a standard one student at Thaikkattukara UP school.

Ashfaq reportedly started living near the child's house two days ago.
