Kochi: The Kerala Police Officers Association has passed a resolution indirectly criticising the disciplinary action taken against police officers in connection with the Cheranalloor accident. The association stated that no police officer is bound to obey an illegal order, irrespective of who issues it.

The resolution was presented at a meeting of the association on Wednesday. It said police officers must exercise discretion and carry out their duties with honesty, a sense of justice and in accordance with the law. It also warned that otherwise, officers who perform their duties could end up facing disciplinary action.

The association also criticised the alleged practice of imposing incorrect recommendations and unfair directives on police personnel. It raised concerns over officers being punished by interpreting their past actions differently, pointing out that some decisions considered appropriate at the time had recently become grounds for disciplinary proceedings.

The resolution comes amid criticism that only police officers faced disciplinary action in connection with the Cheranalloor incident, despite allegations that their actions were influenced by external pressure.

The association's state president, R. Prashanth, and general secretary, C.R. Biju, have also come under attention in the political context surrounding the resolution, given their reported political affiliations. The resolution, however, does not directly name any political leader or party.
