The controversy over missing equipment at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College deepens as a large box and bills are found in the urology head’s office. Officials suspect irregularities

Thiruvananthapuram: Thiruvananthapuram Medical College principal P K Jabbar has once again placed Dr Haris Chirakkal under scrutiny, revealing that an inspection of the doctor’s room uncovered a large box along with purchase bills dated August 2 for a 'Moscilloscope' device. The principal described the discovery as 'unusual' and said a detailed investigation was required.
Dr Haris’s earlier Facebook post about a crisis at the medical college had sparked widespread discussion, prompting the government to appoint an inquiry committee. The panel later concluded that no equipment was missing from the institution, a finding also stated publicly by Health Minister Veena George.
Following that report, a first-phase inspection was carried out. Later, during another check of the head of the department’s room, the disputed device and the large box were reportedly found. CCTV footage allegedly shows someone entering the room, and the principal said the key is currently held by another doctor.
“Dr Haris is a good and sincere doctor. But after a small issue arose, he posted on Facebook, which led to controversy and government intervention. The investigation committee initially found the device missing. A thorough inspection under the DME was carried out last Saturday. Later, in the departmental head’s room, the device and another box were found. That box was not there during earlier checks. Some bills inside seemed unusual. We will submit a proper report to the government,” the principal told reporters.
He added that during the first inspection, the device was found in a small box, but on a later visit, a large box with bills inside labelled 'Moscilloscope' was discovered. Authorities are now verifying whether the device is a new purchase.
When asked why the matter was not reported to the police, the principal said it was their responsibility to submit findings to the government.
Dr Haris is currently on leave and has been served with a government-level memo, which the principal described as 'normal procedure', following his Facebook post. “Whoever violates the rules will be investigated. Neither I nor the government can go beyond this,” he added.
