A fire broke out in the multi-speciality block near the ICU at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, with patients evacuated and access to the area currently restricted

Thiruvananthapuram: A fire incident was reported in the multi-speciality block near the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, triggering a major emergency response. The incident occurred on the second floor, where critically ill patients were being treated, raising immediate concern among hospital authorities.
According to the hospital superintendent, the fire is believed to have originated from a ventilator and spread to a nearby bed. As the ICU room was enclosed, dense smoke quickly filled the space, leading to panic among patients and staff. Officials have indicated that a short circuit could be the likely cause, though a detailed investigation is expected.
Patients raised alarm as smoke spread
Patients inside the ICU reportedly alerted staff as smoke began to spread rapidly. Videos recorded by patients and bystanders showed distress and confusion, with people reacting to the sudden build-up of smoke inside the ward.
Around 39 patients were inside the ICU at the time of the incident. All patients were promptly evacuated and shifted to safer areas within the hospital. Doctors and medical teams ensured that treatment continued without disruption during the evacuation process.
Thiruvananthapuram Mayor V.V. Rajesh visited the hospital and spoke with authorities on-site. He confirmed that all patients are safe and receiving proper medical care. Police officials also reassured the public that there is no cause for panic, stating that the smoke is expected to clear shortly.
Fire brought under control
Fire and rescue teams reached the spot quickly and managed to bring the fire fully under control. Authorities confirmed that the situation has been stabilised and there are no reports of casualties.
While the immediate threat has been contained, officials are expected to conduct a detailed inspection to assess any damage and determine the exact cause of the incident. Other floors of the hospital were also monitored as a precaution.
Further updates are awaited as authorities continue their assessment.
