Kothamangalam (Ernakulam): Animals such as monkeys and mongoose that are often deemed ‘troublemakers’ in human settlements are now protected under the Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Act. With this they come under the endangered species list and are forbidden from being hunted.
The animals protected under Schedule 1 include bonnet monkeys, mongoose, porcupines, foxes and Sambar deers. In the category, they now share space with mighty animals including elephants, tigers and bears.
Any attempt to harm the lives of these animals will invite strict action. The punishments include imprisonment ranging between 3-7 years and a penalty of up to Rs 1 lakh.
Hence, from now on, if such animals venture into farms and residential areas, then they can be driven away or rescued only after receiving permission from the chief wildlife warden. Strict protocols are to be followed while dealing with these animals.
The central rule inducting these animals into schedule 1 was passed in December 2022. The rule came into effect in Kerala In April 2023.
