Japan: A baby macaque named Punch, who captured global attention after being seen clinging to a plush toy, is now thriving and forming bonds within his troop, according to new viral videos.

The young Japanese macaque, once a symbol of loneliness on social media, is now seen playing, cuddling and interacting closely with a female macaque named Momo-chan, marking a significant step in his recovery and social development.

From loneliness to social bonding

Punch, born in July 2025 at Ichikawa City Zoological & Botanical Garden, initially went viral after videos showed him clutching a stuffed toy following abandonment by his mother.

Struggling to bond with other macaques, he relied on the plush toy for comfort and to learn essential behaviours such as clinging — a critical survival skill for infant monkeys. Zookeepers later stepped in to hand-raise him after early rejection from the troop.
