In the wake of the heartbreaking tragedy in Wayanad, several children have been left orphaned. The Child Welfare Committee (CWC), operating under the Central Child Protection Act of 2015, has stepped in to ensure that these children receive the care and protection they urgently need.

The CWC, alongside the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), is working diligently to support these children. These bodies are instrumental in managing the care of children who have lost their parents and are in need of protection. The Juvenile Justice Act 2015 and Adoption Regulations 2022 outline the legal framework for adoption and foster care, ensuring that every child’s best interests are prioritized.

Adoption and foster care procedures

Adoption procedures are strictly regulated. Only individuals who register on the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) website and meet the prescribed criteria are eligible to adopt children.

For those interested in providing a nurturing family environment, fostering is a viable option. Children between the ages of 6 and 18, currently residing in child protection institutions, can be temporarily fostered. This initiative aims to provide these children with a semblance of normalcy and familial love, even if only for a limited period.

To begin the adoption or fostering process, interested parties should register on the CARA website (https://cara.wcd.gov.in). For further information and assistance, individuals can contact the Child Welfare Committee or the District Child Protection Unit in Wayanad.
