Kochi: Amid indications that the police would issue a notice for questioning in connection with the organisation of the controversial mega Bharatanatyam event, which turned sour when Uma Thomas MLA fell from the stage and seriously injured herself, actress Divya Unni has returned to the United States. She left for the US via Kochi Airport on Wednesday. The actress, who has been living in the US for a long time, had come to Kochi specifically for the Bharatanatyam event.
Divya Unni, who was featured as the brand ambassador for the event, was highlighted by the event organisers, Mridanga Vision. The police had informed that they would call Divya Unni to record her statement in connection with two cases relating to the event. Meantime, Divya Unni left Kerala. She flew to the US via Singapore from Kochi Airport.
Many parents had sent their children to the event as Divya Unni was participating. The police have filed cases against four persons related to the financial fraud concerning the dance performance at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, Kaloor. These include Mridanga Vision director Nigosh, his wife, CEO Shameer, and Divya Unni’s friend Poornima. The case has been filed by the Palarivattom police on charges of cheating, based on a complaint by Kaloor resident Biji. The bank accounts involved in the financial transactions related to the event have been frozen.
It is also expected that dance teachers may be implicated in the financial exploitation. The money transfer was reportedly carried out through the dance teachers. Action is likely to be taken against the dance teachers as intermediaries.
If more complaints are received, further cases will be filed accordingly. The complaint alleges that the event organisers committed fraud both financially and otherwise. They collected ₹2000 for participation and later asked for ₹1600 for costumes. Moreover, in the Guinness record attempt, although the organisers received recognition at the Guinness records venue, no rewards were given to the participants in the dance, as per the complaint.
