Angamaly: A 24-year-old youth was killed after a heated argument over giving way on a narrow road escalated into a fatal death. The deceased, identified as Ivin Jijo, son of Jijo James and Rosemary, is a native of Thuravoor, Arissery. Ivin was allegedly run over by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel in a car.
According to sources, Ivin and CISF personnel ended up in an altercation over the issue of not giving side to the car. The car, driven by a CISF officer, sped away with him on the bonnet. Locals, who noticed the incident, attempted to stop the vehicle. In the commotion, the car came to a sudden halt, throwing Ivin off the bonnet. He fell to the ground and was run over by the vehicle, which dragged him for about 20 metres. Ivin succumbed to his injuries soon after.
The incident took place around 10 PM on Wednesday close to Nayathode, roughly one kilometre from Nedumbassery Airport. Ivin, who worked as a chef with Casino Air Caterers and Flight Services Group at the airport, was on his way to work from his home in Thuravoor.
The altercation began when Ivin reportedly tried to overtake the CISF personnel's car on the narrow Thompra Road, which connects the Airport-Mathur Road to the Angamaly-Nayathodu route. The vehicles allegedly brushed against each other, which led to a verbal argument. Ivin, suspecting the officials were intoxicated, tipped off the police. In response, the CISF officers attempted to flee from the scene in their car. When Ivin stood in front of the vehicle to stop them, he was hit, thrown onto the bonnet, and driven away.
The two CISF officials involved were Sub-Inspector Vinay Kumar Das (28) and Constable Mohan Kumar (31), both hailing from Bihar, who were taken into police custody by the Nedumbassery Police. Vinay Kumar, who was driving the vehicle, was handed over to the police by local residents at the scene. He sustained injuries and is currently under treatment at the Kalamassery Medical College Hospital under police watch. Mohan Kumar, who initially fled, was arrested later when he attempted to return to duty.
Despite local residents rushing Ivin to the hospital, his life could not be saved. Eyewitnesses reported that the young man was crying for help while being dragged, but the vehicle did not stop until it was forcefully intercepted by those who witnessed the horrific scene. The incident occurred between St John's Jacobite Chapel and St Sebastian's Chapel on the Angamaly-Nayathodu Road.
Ivin's father, Jijo, is a senior physiotherapist at Angamaly LF Hospital, while his mother, Rosemary, serves as an operation theatre manager at Mar Sleeva Hospital in Pala. His sister, Aleena, works with NatWest Group in the banking sector. Aivin’s body was shifted to his home in Thuravoor on Thursday evening after a post-mortem at Kalamassery Medical College. Ivin's last rites took place on Friday noon at St Augustine’s Church cemetery, Thuravoor.
