In 2024, the number of accidents rose to 48,919, though the death toll dropped to 3,774

Thrissur: Over the past one and a half years, ₹161.57 crore has been collected in fines for traffic violations captured by the AI cameras installed across Kerala. The fines were levied on approximately 50 lakh individuals.
While the AI camera system was introduced with the aim of reducing road accidents, data shows that the number of accidents has actually increased by 2024. However, a slight decrease in the number of fatalities has offered some relief.
The cameras were installed in mid-2023. That year, Kerala recorded 48,091 accidents and 4,080 deaths. In 2024, the number of accidents rose to 48,919, though the death toll dropped to 3,774.
These figures, provided by the Transport Commissionerate in response to a Right to Information (RTI) query, raise questions about the effectiveness of the project, which was launched with the goal of significantly improving road safety.
