The department also pointed out that some drivers tend to speed up during this period to avoid traffic blocks, which further increases the risk of accidents.

Thiruvananthapuram: Most road accidents in Kerala happen between 6 pm and 9 pm, according to data released by the Kerala Motor Vehicles Department. The department shared the information through its official social media handle, pointing out that this evening window is the most accident-prone period on the state’s roads.
This is the time when daylight fades and darkness begins to set in, making driving conditions more difficult.
Falling light and evening rush increase risk
The department said one of the main reasons for accidents during this time is the change in lighting conditions. As daylight reduces quickly, drivers may find it harder to see clearly for a short period, which affects judgement on the road.
At the same time, many people are returning home after work. This leads to tiredness among drivers and also a sense of urgency to reach home faster. The combination of fatigue and haste can reduce attention while driving.
The department also pointed out that some drivers tend to speed up during this period to avoid traffic blocks, which further increases the risk of accidents.
Authorities ask motorists to be more careful during peak hours
In view of these factors, the Motor Vehicles Department has asked drivers to be extra careful during the 6 pm to 9 pm window.
Motorists have been advised to reduce speed and drive within limits, especially during dusk when visibility is low. The department also said headlights and indicators should be switched on as soon as light begins to fade, and drivers should ensure proper use of high beam and low beam depending on road conditions.
Pedestrians urged to remain alert on roads
The advisory also includes caution for pedestrians. People walking along roads or crossing them have been asked to stay alert during evening hours.
They have also been advised to avoid wearing dark-coloured clothing as much as possible during low-light conditions, since it can make them less visible to drivers.
