Kannur: The Amrit Bharat project is set to unveil new developments at 15 railway stations in Kerala by January. This initiative is part of a larger plan to modernise 508 out of 1,309 railway stations across India.

In the Palakkad division alone, a Rs 249 crore project is underway at 16 stations. Except for Kannur, all other stations are expected to be completed by January. Nine of these stations are already more than 80 percent operational. Kannur station has received the highest funding at Rs 31.23 crore, but work has not yet started there as it was added to the project later.

Along with the upgrades to the stations, commercial complexes will also be developed. In comparison to other railway divisions, Western Railway, which includes Mumbai, has the highest number of such stations at 22, followed by Northern Railway, which includes Delhi, with 21, and Southern Railway with 17. Kerala will benefit from seven such stations, with funding allocated as follows:

  • Thiruvananthapuram: Rs 497 crore
  • Kozhikode: Rs 472.96 crore
  • Ernakulam Junction: Rs 444.63 crore
  • Kollam: Rs 384.39 crore
  • Ernakulam Town: Rs 226 crore
  • Varkala: Rs 133 crore

Project goals and improvements

The Amrit Bharat project aims to redevelop these stations cost-effectively. Old and redundant buildings will be replaced, and enhancements will include improved walkways, escalators, lifts, parking facilities, platforms, and restrooms. Modern features such as notification systems, upgraded waiting areas, CCTV surveillance, and Wi-Fi connectivity will also be part of the upgrades.
