Thiruvananthapuram: In an effort to address commuter issues resulting from the state government's recent regulations on private buses, KSRTC (Kerala State Road Transport Corporation) has decided to increase the number of superclass buses. As part of this, additional superclass services will be introduced on various routes. Moreover, to further benefit the passengers, discounted fares will also be offered. KSRTC has already introduced 131 new super-fast buses as part of its ongoing efforts.
It may be noted that the state government restricted the trip distance of stage-carriage private buses to 140 km. Over the rule, the number of private bus services on certain routes was reduced, causing a heavy commuter rush. From March 2023, KSRTC operated 260 services on such routes to curb commuter woes. The addition of new services on more routes is a continuation of the same.
However, many private buses are plying illegally on roads, including nationalised routes, and are causing revenue loss for KSRTC. Kerala Motor Vehicle Department has been taking action against the violators.
Salary of KSRTC employees
The Kerala government has allocated Rs 30 crore to KSRTC for salary distribution (May). KSRTC had asked for Rs 50 crore but only Rs 30 crore was allocated. However, allocation gives a breather to KSRTC. On June 5, KSRTC settled half of the salary of its employees. It took Rs Rs 35 crore as Over Draft and Rs 5 crore from its fund to settle half the salary.
