Kolkata: The West Bengal government is asking for daily health updates on junior doctors who have been hospitalised during their hunger strike. This strike is part of their protest over the tragic rape and murder of a junior female doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in August.

On Friday, Health Secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam issued a notification to the leaders of state-run medical colleges and hospitals. He emphasised the importance of providing proper medical care to those affected. "A status report in all such cases should be submitted to the department at least two times daily. Principals and MSVPs must personally ensure proper treatment in all such cases," the order from the Health Secretary read.

Interestingly, one of the demands from the protesting junior doctors is for the replacement of Nigam as Health Secretary, which has added urgency to their hunger strike.

Currently, eight junior doctors are participating in the hunger strike. Seven are at Esplanade in central Kolkata, while one is at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri. Since the strike began on October 5, six doctors have needed hospitalisation due to serious health issues. Aniket Mahato from R.G. Kar was the first to be hospitalised but was released on Thursday afternoon. He has been advised to follow strict medical guidelines and is not allowed to fast again for the time being.
