Kolkata: Ratna Debnath, the mother of the postgraduate trainee doctor whose 2024 rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College sparked a national outcry, has surged into a significant lead in the Panihati assembly constituency, according to midday data from the Election Commission.

Contesting on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket, Debnath overturned an initial deficit against the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) Tirthankar Ghosh. By the end of the second round of counting, Debnath had secured 13,784 votes, establishing a lead of 5,067 over Ghosh, who trailed with 8,717 votes.

The early performance of Debnath coincides with a broader, historic shift in West Bengal’s political landscape. For the first time in the state's history, the BJP has crossed the majority threshold in early trends, leading in more than 170 seats while the incumbent TMC trails significantly across several traditional strongholds.

A Campaign for Justice

Debnath entered the political arena with a mandate centred on the breakdown of law and order and the safety of women. Her campaign served as a direct challenge to the Mamata Banerjee administration, specifically focusing on the institutional failures highlighted by the tragedy at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

"I lost my daughter, but I want to serve the people and help them," Debnath told reporters during her campaign. "I may not be a doctor like her, but as a representative, I want to continue her mission."

Her candidacy was marked by a symbolic vow to refrain from combing her hair until justice for her daughter is secured, a gesture that resonated deeply within the urban-industrial belt of North 24 Parganas.

Constituency Profile

Panihati (Seat No. 111), part of the Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency, has been a TMC bastion since 2011. In the 2021 assembly election, Nirmal Ghosh of the TMC retained the seat with a commanding 50.5% vote share and a margin exceeding 37,000 votes.

Tirthankar Ghosh, the son of the five-term sitting MLA, was fielded by the TMC to maintain the party's local organisational dominance. However, the 2026 race has been transformed by the high emotional stakes of the RG Kar case, which analysts believe has catalysed a significant shift in voter sentiment among the middle-class and industrial workforce in the district.

Statewide Impact

As tabulation continues across 293 seats, the BJP’s meteoric rise suggests a potential end to the TMC’s 15-year tenure. While the final results are pending several more rounds of counting, the leads in prestige battles like Panihati are being viewed as a referendum on the government’s handling of institutional integrity and public safety.

Officials expect more definitive trends for the North 24 Parganas district by late afternoon.
