The Bhabanipur seat remains a closely contested battleground, with leads oscillating as counting continues. Results are expected to clarify by late morning.

Kolkata: As the tallying of votes entered a critical phase Monday morning, West Bengal Leader of the Opposition and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Suvendu Adhikari voiced strong conviction that a "Hindu consolidation" would carry his party to a historic victory. Peaking as the numbers fluctuated, Adhikari provided a granular breakdown of the early trends in Bhabanipur. He noted that while he initially trailed by approximately 2,000 votes following the first round—which was characterised as covering a Muslim-majority area—he surged to a lead of 2,200 votes after the second round, which transitioned into Hindu-majority booths.
"I want to thank every Hindu, Sanatani, those have cast their votes in favour of me," Adhikari told reporters, asserting that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would ultimately face another defeat at his hands.
Confidence in a Statewide Shift
Adhikari claimed that internal tracking showed the BJP leading in more than 135 constituencies, comfortably ahead of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which he placed at roughly 100 seats. While he acknowledged that the contest in Bhabanipur might remain competitive in the initial stages, he predicted a definitive breakout in his favour by the ninth or tenth round of counting.
"BJP is forming the Govt," Adhikari said, attributing the momentum to a combination of anti-incumbency and a strategic shift in voting patterns. He specifically highlighted what he described as a "bifurcation" of the Muslim vote in districts like Malda, Murshidabad, and Uttar Dinajpur, where some voters reportedly moved away from the TMC toward pro-Muslim parties or, in smaller numbers, the BJP.
"The guarantee given by PM Modi to build Bengal under his leadership has been in his favour," Adhikari told ANI, adding that the full picture would become clearer after 11 a.m.
Current Election Trends
By approximately 10 a.m., early data from the Election Commission and television networks reflected a volatile and exceptionally close race.
- West Bengal: Initial reports placed both the BJP and TMC in a dead heat, with both parties showing leads in approximately 112 seats each. However, more recent updates suggest a surge for the BJP, with some trackers placing them above the 150-mark—past the 148-seat majority threshold—as counting progresses for 293 of the 294 assembly seats.
- Bhabanipur Seat: The contest continues to oscillate between the two leaders. While Adhikari held a 1,558-vote lead after the second round, Banerjee has also occupied the top spot as different municipal wards are tallied.
