This time, the seat has turned into a prestige contest for the DMDK’s leadership under Premalatha Vijayakanth, as part of its alliance arrangement with the DMK

Premalatha Vijayakant leads with 69351 votes in Virudhachalam with Vijay S from TVK trailing behind.
Virudhachalam in northern Tamil Nadu is emerging as one of the most politically volatile constituencies in this election, where caste dynamics, alliance calculations, and legacy politics intersect in a tightly contested field.
Long defined by strong Vanniyar caste influence and an agrarian economy, the constituency has historically been known for razor-thin margins and shifting electoral loyalties. It also carries the symbolic weight of the late Vijayakanth, whose party DMDK made its electoral debut here in 2006 by winning its only seat in that election, cementing Virudhachalam as a “Captain legacy” stronghold.
The Prestige of the "Captain" Factor
Virudhachalam holds a sacred place in the history of the DMDK. It was here in 2006 that the late Vijayakanth won his maiden seat, launching a political movement that challenged the Dravidian duopoly. Today, the seat is a massive prestige battle for his successor, Premalatha Vijayakanth.
Now a key ally of the DMK, the DMDK's performance today will determine if the "Captain’s" core base remains intact and—more importantly—if that base is successfully transferable to the ruling DMK alliance.
This time, the seat has turned into a prestige contest for the DMDK’s leadership under Premalatha Vijayakanth, as part of its alliance arrangement with the DMK. The performance of the DMK–DMDK combine here is being closely tracked as a test of whether the partnership can translate into ground-level consolidation in northern pockets of the state.
Candidates of 2026 election
| Candidate Name | Party |
|---|---|
| Premalatha Vijayakanth | DMDK |
| Tamilarasi Aathimoolam | PMK |
| S. Vijay | TVK |
| Amudha Nambi | NTK |
The constituency is also being viewed as a broader indicator of alliance stability for the DMK camp, especially given the involvement of Congress, VCK, and other smaller parties whose relevance in this region is under scrutiny. The outcome is expected to feed into larger questions about whether alliance arithmetic can hold firm across Tamil Nadu in tightly contested regions.
For the VCK, Virudhachalam carries additional significance as it falls within the parliamentary influence zone of its leader Thol Thirumavalavan. Alongside the Kattumannarkoil assembly segment, where the party is also contesting a parallel high-stakes battle against the PMK, Virudhachalam serves as a key test of the party’s continuing electoral relevance.
Adding further complexity is the split within the PMK, which has reshaped the NDA’s arithmetic in the region. The alliance has fielded Tamilarasi Aathimoolam, while a rival faction led by Ramadoss Senior has also put forward Suresh as a candidate. This internal division is expected to directly impact the traditional PMK vote base, which remains influential in this core belt.
The 2021 Benchmark: A Razor-Thin Margin
The 2021 Assembly Election here was defined by one of the narrowest margins in Tamil Nadu’s history. The victory was a cliffhanger that underscored the constituency's unpredictable nature.
| Candidate (2021) | Party | Votes | Vote % |
| R. Radhakrishnan | INC (DMK Alliance) | 77,064 | 39.17% |
| J. Karthikeyan | PMK | 76,202 | 38.73% |
| Premalatha Vijayakanth | DMDK | 25,908 | 13.17% |
