Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has clarified his controversial body language during his Assembly speech, saying the gesture was inadvertent and was not intended to hurt anyone personally.

Vijay issued the clarification on X after his response speech during the debate on the demands for the Police and Fire and Rescue Services departments in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on September 7.

In his post, Vijay said his body language, which appeared during the speech, was “not in any way intentional”. He requested that it should not be interpreted as an act intended to hurt anyone’s feelings on a personal level.

The clarification comes after portions of his Assembly speech, particularly his reference to former Chief Minister MK Stalin’s detention during the Emergency under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA), became a subject of political criticism.

Why did the gesture become controversial?

During the Assembly speech, Vijay referred to Stalin’s detention under MISA, a preventive-detention law used during the Emergency between 1975 and 1977.

Stalin was detained during the Emergency when he was a young DMK leader. The episode remains an important part of the DMK’s political narrative surrounding the Emergency and the party’s history of opposition to the period’s restrictions on civil liberties.

Vijay’s accompanying physical gesture was interpreted by critics as referring to the injuries Stalin suffered during his detention. CPI(M) state secretary P Shanmugam criticised the Chief Minister, while DMK leaders also objected to the manner in which the episode was presented.

Vijay has now said the body language was not intentional and should not be understood as a personal act.

What was the larger Assembly dispute?

The controversy emerged during a wider political confrontation in the Assembly.

Vijay was responding to the debate on police and Fire and Rescue Services. Opposition members had raised issues including law and order, custodial deaths, police conduct, drug control, women’s safety, selective registration of cases and the functioning of the Home and Intelligence wings.

The Chief Minister outlined his government’s measures and also launched attacks on the previous DMK government, referring to alleged corruption, political interference and historical controversies.

The DMK criticised the speech, arguing that Vijay had spent substantial time attacking the previous government rather than directly answering questions about the current law-and-order situation.

Why is Vijay’s clarification significant?

The X post appears aimed at separating the disputed gesture from any suggestion that Vijay intended to personally insult Stalin or anyone else.

It also comes after the gesture became one of the most contentious parts of a speech that had already triggered criticism from the DMK and Left parties.

The clarification does not settle the wider political dispute over the Assembly speech. It specifically addresses the interpretation of Vijay’s body language and his stated intention behind it.

The controversy highlights how physical gestures can become politically significant when used during discussions of sensitive historical events. The MISA episode has particular political importance in Tamil Nadu because of Stalin’s detention during the Emergency and the DMK’s longstanding emphasis on that period.

Vijay’s clarification is therefore narrower than the wider dispute over his Assembly reply. He has addressed the question of whether the gesture was intentional, while the Opposition’s broader criticism concerns the content, focus and political tone of his response to the police debate.

The episode is also part of a larger confrontation between the ruling TVK government and the DMK over law and order, political conduct and the use of historical controversies in present-day Assembly debates.
