US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor on Saturday said Washington "values" its relationship with India after holding talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi

New Delhi: US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor visited New Delhi on Saturday, meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss cooperation on defence, trade, technology, and critical minerals. Gor emphasised that the US values its relationship with India and expressed optimism about the future of bilateral ties under the leadership of Donald Trump and Narendra Modi.
Gor also held discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. Following the meeting, Jaishankar noted that the talks focused on the India-US relationship and its global significance.

The discussions on critical minerals are particularly significant in light of China’s export restrictions. Gor highlighted the importance of this sector to both nations, while Modi expressed confidence that Gor’s tenure would strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.
The visit comes amid ongoing tensions over the Trump administration’s imposition of 50 per cent tariffs on Indian exports and other measures, including restrictions on H1B visas. India has criticised these moves as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable.” Recent phone conversations between Modi and Trump have raised hopes for progress in trade negotiations, which have resumed after a brief pause.
Gor, a close associate of President Trump and former White House personnel director, was confirmed by the US Senate this week. While he will not present his credentials during this visit, Gor expressed gratitude to Trump for the nomination and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening India-US ties.
