Why SIR is being conducted now
Addresses “legacy data” issues from voter rolls last updated 2002-2004.
Removes dead, shifted, or duplicate voters and ensures accurate electoral numbers.
Ensures voter rolls are legally defensible and transparent ahead of upcoming state elections in 2026.
Significance of SIR 2026
- Largest voter deletion exercise in India’s recent history.
- Affects nearly 18.7% of Uttar Pradesh voters, potentially impacting women and previously underrepresented groups disproportionately.
- Marks a crucial step for accurate, credible elections in India.
UP citizens must check their names immediately, file objections or corrections if required, and ensure they are included in the final electoral roll by March 6, 2026. Early verification is key to avoiding disenfranchisement.
