Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of using an app for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the state that was designed by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) IT cell.

Speaking to the media at Sagar Islands in South 24 Parganas, Banerjee claimed the SIR process was riddled with errors, including voters being incorrectly listed as deceased and elderly or seriously ill citizens being summoned unnecessarily. She described the app as “illegal, unconstitutional, and undemocratic.”

The Chief Minister has been a vocal critic of the SIR exercise. On Sunday, she wrote to the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, raising multiple objections. On Monday, she said she plans to personally approach the Supreme Court to highlight the “plight” of people affected by what she called an “unplanned” process.

“We are going the legal way on the SIR exercise. The Supreme Court will resume on Tuesday after its vacation. If necessary, II will personally plead against the SIR there. I also have a law degree, so I can plead at the apex court,” Banerjee said. She clarified that she would act as a common citizen, not as an advocate, and described the exercise as harassment of ordinary people.

Banerjee also criticised the CEC for allegedly running the ECI through WhatsApp messages and attempting to curtail the voting rights of West Bengal residents.
