The Madhya Pradesh government has proposed transferring the high-profile Twisha Sharma death case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), officials said, amid growing controversy over the probe into the 33-year-old woman’s death in Bhopal.

The latest development comes as both the accused side and Twisha Sharma’s family push for further legal action in the alleged dowry harassment and mental torture case.

Earlier on Thursday, Advocate Mrigendra Singh, appearing for the accused side, said they also wanted a CBI investigation into the matter. He confirmed that accused Samarth Singh has moved the Madhya Pradesh High Court seeking bail after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected by a Bhopal court.

“Twisha Sharma, who committed suicide on May 12th. Her mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, has already had her bail application granted by the Court of Bhopal. Now, we had submitted an anticipatory bail application on behalf of her husband, Samarth Singh, in the Court of Bhopal, which was rejected. We have submitted a bail application against him in the High Court, which is likely to be heard tomorrow or next Monday before the Judge,” the lawyer told ANI.

He also rejected allegations made by Twisha Sharma’s father and claimed the accusations were aimed at generating sympathy. “We also want this case to be investigated by the CBI,” he added.

Twisha Sharma, a resident of Noida, had married Bhopal-based Samarth Singh in December 2025. She was found hanging at her marital home on May 12. Following her death, her family accused her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment and mental torture. Police registered a case against Samarth Singh and his mother Giribala Singh, a retired judge, and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the matter.

Twisha Sharma’s family is now preparing to approach the Jabalpur High Court seeking cancellation of Giribala Singh’s anticipatory bail, their lawyer Ankur Pandey said.

The family also plans to seek a re-postmortem examination of Twisha Sharma’s body. According to the lawyer, the body has remained at AIIMS Bhopal since the post-mortem was conducted on May 13.

Pandey alleged that several phone numbers linked to Giribala Singh were not properly investigated despite being submitted before the court during the anticipatory bail proceedings.

“The family has released certain phone numbers; these numbers were provided to the court by the defence counsel during Giribala Singh's anticipatory bail hearing, yet the police have failed to investigate them. The family has conducted their own investigation. Furthermore, the audio that has gone viral on social media must also be investigated. The manner in which Giribala is speaking makes it evident what kind of harassment Twisha must have endured,” the lawyer said.
