Trinamool Congress MPs will back the opposition’s no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla during the second phase of the Budget Session beginning March 9

New Delhi: The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) will support the opposition’s no-confidence motion against Om Birla, according to party sources, ahead of the second phase of the Budget Session of Parliament beginning on March 9.
The move comes as several opposition parties prepare to push for a resolution seeking Birla’s removal as Speaker, accusing him of acting in a partisan manner during proceedings in the Lok Sabha.

The resolution is expected to be moved by Congress MPs Mohammad Jawed, Kodikunnil Suresh, and Mallu Ravi.
Opposition allegations
Opposition leaders have accused Birla of preventing Rahul Gandhi and other opposition MPs from speaking in the House and of making “unwarranted allegations” against women MPs from opposition parties.
They also criticised the suspension of eight opposition members for the remainder of the session, alleging that ruling party MPs were not reprimanded for making derogatory remarks against former prime ministers.
According to the notice listed in the Lok Sabha’s business agenda, the opposition believes Birla has “ceased to maintain the impartiality necessary to command the confidence of all sections of the House.”
Whip issued by parties
Both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Indian National Congress have issued a three-line whip to their Lok Sabha MPs, asking them to remain present in the House from March 9 to 11.
At least 118 opposition MPs have reportedly backed the notice seeking Birla’s removal.
Background to the row
The controversy began during the first phase of the Budget Session, when Rahul Gandhi attempted to quote from an unpublished memoir of former Army chief Manoj Mukund Naravane regarding the 2020 India-China standoff in eastern Ladakh.
The incident triggered a major uproar in Parliament, leading to the suspension of several opposition MPs and repeated adjournments during the session.
Following the notice of the motion, Om Birla had earlier said he would refrain from presiding over the House on moral grounds until the matter was resolved.
The second phase of the Budget Session is expected to see heated exchanges between the government and the opposition as the issue is taken up in the Lok Sabha.
