Violence erupted in West Bengal's East Medinipur district after Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari's convoy was pelted with stones by alleged TMC supporters. The BJP has blamed the ruling party, calling the incident a “planned attack to silence dissent.”

East Medinipur, West Bengal: In a dramatic escalation of political tensions in West Bengal, BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari's convoy was attacked on Monday in the volatile Nandigram area. The incident, which occurred during his visit to a local event, saw a mob pelting stones at his vehicle, shattering windows and injuring several party workers. Watch his byte here:
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with black smoke rising from burning tyres and police struggling to control the crowd. The BJP has directly accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of orchestrating the attack, calling it a “deliberate assassination attempt” on Adhikari, who is known for his vocal criticism of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
In a statement shortly after the attack, Adhikari said, “This was not just an attack—it was a conspiracy to eliminate me. I will not be silenced.”
Security forces rushed to the scene, using batons and tear gas to disperse the crowd. A heavy police presence remains in the area, and Section 144 has reportedly been imposed to prevent further escalation. The TMC, however, has denied any involvement, calling the incident a result of “local unrest” and accusing the BJP of “politicising every confrontation.”
The attack has sparked fresh outrage in political circles, with the BJP threatening statewide protests and demanding immediate action from Governor CV Ananda Bose.
