Ratan Tata, the head of the Tata Group, had himself revealed that there is a very emotional reason behind the birth of the Tata Nano. Though the Nano may not stand out as a flagship model in Tata Motors’ lineup today, its impact was significant. Designed as a compact hatchback, the Tata Nano transformed the dream of owning a car into reality for thousands of middle-class Indian families.

The Nano wasn’t just a product of engineering, it was born out of a vision to provide safe and accessible mobility to the common man. Ratan Tata’s emotional connection to the project adds another layer of meaning to what the car represented: dignity, affordability, and progress for everyday Indians.

A heartwarming tribute by Shantanu Naidu, a close associate of industrialist Ratan Tata, has reignited public interest in the iconic Tata Nano. Shantanu, who owns one of the last models of the discontinued car, recently shared emotional photos and a heartfelt note on social media to mark six years with his beloved Nano, affectionately named Lily.

"Six years to Lily today :) She may be small but she has held the weight of my entire life, breakdowns, breakthroughs, love and loss. She’s a memory keeper, evidence of a promise kept, and a whisper of an engineering legacy never meant to be forgotten. Thank you, Lily, for your loyalty and love, despite all the battle scar dents. Happy sixth." - he wrote on LinkedIn.

The Nano car launched by Tata Motors is one of the vehicles that has revolutionised the automobile sector in India. It has made the dream of owning a car accessible to the common man and those with low income. Tata Motors had announced that it is introducing the Nano, a compact city car, to attract motorcycle and scooter users in India.

When the Nano was first introduced in 2008, the ex-showroom price of this vehicle was Rs 1 lakh. However, by 2018, the ex-showroom price of this vehicle was between Rs 2.05 lakh and Rs 2.97 lakh. There were seven variants in petrol and CNG options. Tata Motors ended the production of the Nano by the end of 2018. It is reported that less than 300 Nanos have been manufactured and sold in the Indian automobile market in the last period.

The Tata Nano was launched with a 624 cc two-cylinder petrol engine. The engine produced 37 bhp of power and 51 Nm of torque. This vehicle, which was equipped with a four-speed transmission, had a fuel efficiency of 22 kmpl. The decision to discontinue this vehicle was made after only one unit was launched in June 2018. However, the official announcement about the discontinuation of Tata Nano production was made two years later in 2020.
