Hyderabad: The Telangana government has banned mayonnaise made from raw eggs following several reports of food poisoning linked to the condiment. The Commissioner of Food Safety issued a notice on Wednesday, prohibiting the production, storage, and sale of this type of mayonnaise for one year, effective immediately from October 30.

Officials found that mayonnaise made from raw eggs is suspected to be behind multiple food poisoning incidents in recent months, based on public complaints and enforcement activities.

Mayonnaise, commonly known as ‘mayo,’ is a thick, creamy sauce made by mixing egg yolks with oil and often flavoured with vinegar or lemon juice. It is widely used as a dressing for sandwiches, salads, snacks, and various dishes.

The Commissioner’s decision was made under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, to protect public health. Following a recommendation from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), mayo will be removed from restaurants and supermarkets across the state.

The GHMC had received numerous complaints about the mayonnaise used in dishes at various hotels in Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Inspections revealed that some popular hotels, pubs, and restaurants were using substandard mayonnaise.

In recent months, at least 10 cases of food poisoning linked to egg-based mayonnaise were reported. One alarming incident involved a 33-year-old woman who died and 20 others who fell ill after consuming momos from a street vendor in Hyderabad last week, with contaminated mayonnaise being a suspect.
