Chennai: All TASMAC liquor outlets across Tamil Nadu will remain closed for three days from April 21 to April 23 as part of measures to ensure the peaceful and orderly conduct of the Assembly elections scheduled for April 23.

The Election Commission of India has directed that the prohibition will be in effect from 10 am on April 21 until midnight on polling day.

Officials have cautioned that strict action will be taken against any person or establishment found violating the order by engaging in illegal liquor sales during this period. The restriction aims to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain law and order during the crucial voting phase.

Polling across 234 constituencies

Voting for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections will be held across all 234 constituencies, with a total of 4,023 candidates contesting.

The Election Commission has put in place extensive arrangements to support smooth polling. A total of 75,097 polling booths have been set up across the state, including additional stations to manage voter turnout and ensure accessibility for voters.

Campaigning enters final phase

As the election date approaches, political parties have intensified campaigning across Tamil Nadu. Despite the intense summer heat, leaders and candidates continue to engage with voters through public meetings, roadshows, and door-to-door outreach.

The final phase of campaigning has seen increased political activity, with leaders travelling across constituencies to secure voter support.

Authorities have confirmed that all necessary security and logistical arrangements have been made to ensure free and fair elections. Enforcement teams have been deployed to monitor compliance with election rules, including the ban on liquor sales.

Officials have reiterated that the temporary closure of liquor outlets during elections is a standard precautionary measure aimed at preventing alcohol influence on voters and maintaining a calm electoral environment.
