Tamil Nadu is set to witness widespread rain and thunderstorms on January 9, with Chennai and several coastal districts under close watch as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal intensifies, prompting the IMD to issue an Orange Alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall.
As South India prepares for Friday, January 9, weather conditions across the region are set to remain varied, with haze, mist, rain, and severe weather alerts in place for several states.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its bulletin issued on Thursday evening, said a deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal is driving widespread rainfall activity, particularly along Tamil Nadu’s coast.

In Hyderabad, the day is expected to remain relatively calm, with a partly cloudy sky accompanied by haze. Temperatures are likely to range between 13°C and 28°C, while humidity levels are expected to vary between 38% and 66%. No weather warnings have been issued for the city.
Amaravati is also forecast to experience partly cloudy conditions with haze. The temperature is expected to range from 19°C to 31°C, and the IMD has not issued any alerts for the region.
In Bengaluru, misty conditions are likely during the early morning hours. The city is expected to experience temperatures between 15°C and 26°C, with humidity levels fluctuating between 50% and 75%. No warnings have been sounded for Karnataka’s capital.
Kerala’s capital, Thiruvananthapuram, is expected to witness a partly cloudy sky with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. Temperatures are likely to range between 23°C and 34°C, with humidity around 60 percent. The IMD has not issued any weather alerts for the city.
Conditions are expected to be more intense in Chennai and the surrounding districts. The city is likely to experience a partly cloudy sky with thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate rain. Temperatures will range between 24°C and 28–29°C. The IMD has warned that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely.
Chennai Weather Update:
A break in Chennai winter weather and cloudy/rainy weather is expected during this weekend. The change in weather is expected due to an easterly wave induced by a Tropical Depression in the Southwest Bay of Bengal.
An Orange Alert has been issued for several coastal districts of Tamil Nadu as the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal intensifies. The system is currently located about 410 km from Hambantota in Sri Lanka and roughly 980 km from Chennai, moving west-northwest.
According to IMD forecasts, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam on January 9, while heavy rain is expected in Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, and Mayiladuthurai.
Additionally, a frost warning has been issued for the Nilgiris district and the Kodaikanal hill regions during the nights and early mornings of January 8 and 9. Residents have been advised to take precautions as weather conditions remain dynamic across South India.
