Chennai: Cyclone Ditwah has weakened into a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu on Monday, December 1. The alert covers Tiruvallur, Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, and Karaikal.

According to the IMD bulletin, heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, and Telangana on December 1. As of 2 am on Monday, the depression’s centre was approximately 50 km from the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast.

In view of the heavy rain and waterlogging, all educational institutions, both government and private, have been closed in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, and Puducherry for December 1.

  • December 4: Light to moderate rain at a few places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with isolated thunderstorms and lightning.
  • December 5: Light to moderate rain at a few places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

The IMD continues to monitor the situation and advises residents to exercise caution in affected areas.
