Chennai: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued a fresh weather alert for Tamil Nadu, forecasting heavy rain and strong winds in several districts on Thursday due to multiple cyclonic circulations active over the region. The latest weather update has also warned fishermen against venturing into the sea as rough conditions are expected along the Tamil Nadu coast and the Gulf of Mannar.

According to the weather department, cyclonic circulations are currently prevailing over north Tamil Nadu, the southeast Arabian Sea and the central east-southeast Bay of Bengal. These weather systems are likely to trigger widespread rainfall activity across parts of the state over the next two days.

Heavy rain accompanied by gusty winds is expected in the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul and Theni districts on Thursday. Officials said unstable weather conditions could lead to temporary disruptions, especially in hilly and western districts that are likely to receive intense spells of rain.

The RMC has also forecast strong surface winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kmph in Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem and Erode districts.

The weather warning comes amid the presence of multiple atmospheric circulations influencing Tamil Nadu and nearby coastal regions. Meteorologists said these systems are enhancing moisture flow and creating favourable conditions for rain and gusty winds across several districts.

Rainfall activity is expected to continue on Friday as well, particularly in Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Ranipet districts.

However, while some regions are likely to receive rain, northern interior parts of Tamil Nadu may witness a rise in temperatures by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius on Friday, increasing heat discomfort levels.

Weather forecast for Chennai

For Chennai and its surrounding suburbs, the RMC has predicted partly cloudy skies along with heat-related discomfort during the daytime. The maximum temperature in the city is expected to hover around 40 degrees Celsius, making conditions humid despite cloud cover.

Meanwhile, the meteorological department has cautioned fishermen against venturing into the sea due to the possibility of squally weather over the Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar and parts of the central Bay of Bengal.
