The Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) on Monday released the state’s final electoral roll following a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, culminating in a significant overhaul of voter records ahead of the forthcoming 2026 Assembly elections.

The comprehensive update resulted in the deletion of 97.37 lakh names from the electoral register, bringing the tally of eligible voters in the state to 5.67 crore.

The final list, published on February 23, 2026, reflects the outcome of detailed verification and scrutiny conducted over several months.

The revision process, which began on October 27, 2025, used January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date, and included multiple phases of enumeration, claims, objections, and hearings.

Addressing the media at a press conference in Chennai, Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik underlined that the exercise aimed to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the electoral roll by removing duplicates, obsolete entries, and names of ineligible or deceased voters.

“The final list reflects meticulous verification and is in line with directive norms. Continuous updating will be taken up with immediate effect,” she said.

Before the revision process began, the state’s electoral register recorded approximately 6.41 crore electors. Over the course of the exercise, while 97.37 lakh names were deleted under various categories, around 7.40 lakh first-time voters aged 18–19 were added, reflecting ongoing demographic changes.

The SIR exercise also provided a window for voters to file claims and objections, resulting in the addition of 27.53 lakh eligible electors during that period. Meanwhile, 4.23 lakh entries were identified as ineligible and subsequently removed.

The final electoral roll also presents a detailed demographic breakdown: female voters marginally outnumber male voters, with over 2.89 crore women registered compared with 2.77 crore men. Additionally, the updated list includes 12.51 lakh voters in the 18–19 age group, 4.63 lakh persons with disabilities, and nearly 4 lakh senior citizens above the age of 85.

Geographically, the Sholinganallur Assembly constituency in Chengalpattu district recorded the highest number of registered electors, while the Harbour constituency in Chennai showed the smallest electorate.

Patnaik urged all electors to verify their names on the final roll by visiting the official CEO website. Citizens discovering discrepancies, including missing names or incorrect details, were advised to utilise Form-6 for inclusion, Form-8 for corrections, or Form-7 for deletion (if required), available through online and offline channels.

The final roll will serve as the definitive list of eligible voters for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections, slated to be held before May 10 this year. Authorities have emphasised that maintaining an up-to-date and accurate electoral register is critical to conducting free and fair elections in the state.
