Tamil Nadu is set to vote in the Legislative Assembly Elections 2026 on 23 April, and voters are getting ready for polling day. A key document used during this time is the Voter Information Slip, also known as the Booth Slip. It helps voters locate their polling station and makes the voting process easier.

What is a Booth Slip?

The Booth Slip is a simple reference document issued to voters before elections. It contains essential details such as the assigned polling station, the voter’s serial number in the electoral roll, and the voting timings.

The slip acts as a quick guide for voters on election day. By providing key polling information in one place, it helps reduce delays and confusion, especially for first-time voters or those unfamiliar with their polling station location.

Booth Level Officers (BLOs) usually distribute Booth Slips door-to-door before elections. However, if a voter does not receive the slip or misplaces it, there is no need for concern. It can still be accessed easily through online portals or the mobile application.
How to access the Booth Slip online

Voters can download their Booth Slip through official Election Commission of India portals.

  • By visiting voters.eci.gov.in or electoralsearch.eci.gov.in, voters can search their details in the electoral roll using personal information, EPIC number, or a registered mobile number.
  • After entering the required details along with the captcha, the voter profile will appear.
  • From there, the Booth Slip can be viewed or downloaded in PDF format for printing or digital use.

For smartphone users, the Voter Helpline App offers a faster way to access the Booth Slip.

  • Once installed, voters can search their name in the electoral roll using their EPIC number or by scanning the barcode on their voter ID card.
  • The Booth Slip can then be downloaded directly onto the device, making it convenient to access anytime.

Even if the Booth Slip is not delivered, voters will still have access to all necessary information through official digital platforms. In case of any doubt or assistance, voters can contact the Election Commission’s toll-free helpline number 1950 for help related to electoral rolls and polling details.

Important clarification: Booth Slip is not an identity proof

It is important to understand that the voter information slip, or Booth Slip, is not a valid identity document for voting. It is only meant to help voters locate their polling booth and understand their details in the electoral roll.

For voting, a valid identity proof is required. However, the physical Voter ID card (EPIC) is not mandatory at the polling station. What is essential is that the voter’s name appears in the electoral roll. If it is listed, the person is eligible to vote after identity verification at the booth.

Even if a voter has forgotten or misplaced their Voter ID card (EPIC), they can still cast their vote as long as their name is included in the voter list.

Accepted alternative photo identity documents

The Election Commission of India allows voters to present any one of the approved photo identity documents for verification. These include:

  • Aadhaar Card
  • PAN Card
  • Driving Licence
  • Passport
  • MNREGA Job Card
  • Bank or Post Office passbook with photograph
  • Pension document with photograph
  • Service identity card issued to government employees
  • Disability Identity Card (UDID)
  • Smart Card issued under government schemes
  • Any other officially issued photo identity card approved by the Election Commission
