New Delhi: Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a key accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks case, is likely to be lodged in a high-security ward of Delhi’s Tihar Jail upon his arrival in India, prison sources said on Wednesday.
Rana, 64, a Pakistan-born Canadian national, is being extradited from the United States after his final attempt to block the process failed. The U.S. Supreme Court rejected his appeal, clearing the way for his extradition. According to reports, he has been handed over to Indian authorities and is expected to reach India by Thursday afternoon.
Prison authorities have made necessary preparations to accommodate him in a secure facility and are awaiting court directions for his formal lodging, officials said. His flight will land in New Delhi on Thursday afternoon.
Rana is known to be a close associate of David Coleman Headley alias Daood Gilani, a U.S. citizen and one of the key conspirators behind the deadly Mumbai terror attack. The assault, carried out by 10 Pakistani terrorists on November 26, 2008, targeted prominent locations including the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, the Oberoi Trident, and the Nariman (Jewish) House.
The coordinated 60-hour siege left 166 people dead and over 300 injured, sending shockwaves across India and the world. The incident brought India and Pakistan dangerously close to armed conflict.
A multi-agency Indian team has travelled to the U.S. to facilitate Rana's extradition and secure his return. His interrogation is expected to provide critical insights into the planning and execution of the terror attacks.
