New Delhi: Actor Rajpal Yadav has spoken publicly following his release on interim bail in a ₹9 crore cheque bounce case, expressing gratitude to supporters across the country and the film industry for standing by him during the legal proceedings. Yadav, who was released from Tihar Jail until 18 March, visited his ancestral village in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, where he briefly addressed the media.

During the visit, Yadav made an unusual appeal regarding prison facilities, suggesting that jails introduce designated smoking areas, similar to those at airports and railway stations. He said correctional institutions should balance discipline with rehabilitation and help individuals rebuild their lives.

“Prisons should have designated smoking areas… Correctional institutions should help individuals rebuild their lives,” he said.

Yadav also emphasised that not every inmate fits the stereotype of a hardened criminal. “It is often difficult to judge from the outside who is a hardened criminal and who made a one-time mistake. My advocate Bhaskar Upadhyay will officially respond to all legal questions,” he added.

The actor said he would limit interactions with reporters over the next few days due to a family wedding and would hold a formal press conference later.

The legal matter, dating back to 2012, concerns a bounced cheque. The Delhi High Court granted him interim bail until 18 March, on condition of a ₹1 lakh bail bond and furnishing a surety. Earlier, the court had directed him to deposit ₹1.5 crore; relief was granted after confirmation of partial payment.

Expressing appreciation for public support, Yadav said: “The way the entire country, the world, and Bollywood have loved me, if I face any allegations, I’m available to answer. Thank you, High Court, for giving me the opportunity to be heard.”

In recent days, Bollywood personalities including Sonu Sood and Mika Singh publicly voiced support for Yadav as the case unfolded.
