The Supreme Court will on Monday consider pleas filed against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in connection with a controversial video
New Delhi: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on February 16 petitions seeking action against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over a viral video allegedly showing him aiming and firing a rifle at members of a particular community.
According to the Supreme Court cause list, a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi is likely to hear the matter on Monday. On February 10, the apex court had agreed to consider listing a plea filed by Left leaders seeking action against Himanta Biswa Sarma.

During the earlier hearing, the court observed, in reference to the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, that “the problem is that a part of the elections is fought before it.”
Viral video and political reaction
The controversy centres on a video shared on February 7 by the Assam BJP on its official X handle. The video allegedly showed Sarma taking aim with a rifle and firing at two individuals, one wearing a skull cap and another with a beard.
The post triggered political condemnation and allegations of inciting communal tension. It was later deleted following criticism. Separate petitions have been filed by leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Communist Party of India. CPI leader Annie Raja has sought registration of an FIR against Sarma, alleging hate speech aimed at communal polarisation.
The petitioners have also requested the constitution of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), arguing that an independent probe may not be possible through state or central agencies.
In addition, a separate petition filed by 12 individuals has sought directions to prevent divisive comments by persons holding constitutional posts.
The pleas allege that Sarma made provocative speeches and statements in the run-up to elections. The case comes amid heightened political activity ahead of the Assam Assembly polls. The Supreme Court’s hearing on February 16 is expected to determine the next course of action regarding the petitions.
