In a explosive political salvo, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's family of illegally occupying around 12,000 bighas (over 3,960 acres) of land across the state, calling it a massive "land scam".

Addressing a press conference, Gogoi claimed a Congress "investigation" uncovered the holdings, with the figure likely to rise as probes continue.

"Almost 12,000 bighas of land have been occupied by the CM and his family across Assam," he alleged.

Gogoi dismissed Sarma's recent revival of his purported Pakistan links -- promised to be exposed by September 10, 2025 -- as a deflection tactic.

"Why did he not do it on September 10? He has been sleeping for five months and suddenly remembered," the Lok Sabha Deputy Leader of Congress shot back.

"He knows we are preparing a dossier on his and his family's corruption and land grab. It will be a flop show," Gogoi added.

The BJP had no immediate response to the charges, which escalate the bitter feud between the ruling party and opposition ahead of key state polls.
