Gangtok (Sikkim): A severe landslide triggered by continuous heavy rainfall has affected more than 30 houses in Rimbi in Sikkim’s Gyalshing district, forcing several families to move to safer locations as authorities remain on high alert.

The landslide occurred on Thursday night, with large quantities of mud, rocks and debris flowing down from the upper slopes towards inhabited areas. Several houses were damaged or destroyed, while government quarters of the Power Department were also affected. No casualties have been reported so far.

The incident has raised concern among residents as heavy rain continues and nearby homes, properties and local connectivity remain at risk.

CM Prem Singh Tamang assures support

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed concern over the situation and assured residents that the government stood firmly with them.

“Deeply saddened and concerned by the situation in Rimbi, Gyalshing district, following the severe landslides last night. The situation remains serious, and the safety and well-being of the people continue to be our foremost priority,” Tamang said in a Facebook post.

He said the administration was closely monitoring the situation and that necessary directions had been issued to the authorities to remain on high alert and take every possible measure to ensure public safety.

“I understand the deep distress and uncertainty being faced by the residents, especially as the difficulties have persisted from the very beginning. My thoughts and prayers are with every family affected,” the Chief Minister said.

 

Tamang also urged people to remain vigilant, follow official advisories and support one another during the continuing torrential rain.

Damage assessment underway

The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Gangtok, has begun an extensive damage assessment following rain-related incidents across the district.

A multi-agency team led by Kabi Tingda MLA Tshering T Bhutia, along with councillors, DDMA officials, Roads and Bridges Department engineers, the Ranka Block Development Officer and revenue surveyors, inspected several affected locations on Wednesday and Thursday.

The teams assessed landslides, road blockages, mud and debris flows, and damage to residential structures across areas including the Luing–Ranka Highway, Bojoghari, Lingding, Ranka, Sichey and Arithang.

Several roads remain obstructed, affecting vehicular movement. The Sewage Treatment Plant at Sichey has also been damaged, while debris near the Enchey School 33/11 kV Switching Station poses a potential hazard.

Tarpaulins have been placed at vulnerable slide zones to prevent further rainwater seepage. Authorities have directed departments to clear roads and debris, restore connectivity, assess damage and provide assistance to affected residents.

People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel through landslide-prone areas, particularly at night, and to report warning signs such as cracks, slope movement or falling debris.
