Following Pakistan’s thwarted missile attempt on Indian military bases, several Indian states have declared emergency holidays

As military tensions escalate between India and Pakistan following an attempted missile strike by Pakistan on Indian military bases, multiple Indian states have initiated emergency protocols, including school closures, blackouts, and suspension of government staff leave.
The Leh administration on Friday announced that all schools in the district will remain closed on May 9 and 10 in view of the prevailing tensions between India and Pakistan, according to officials.
"All government and private schools in Leh district shall remain closed for the next two days," said Deputy Commissioner, Leh, Santosh Sukhdeva. This step has been taken in view of the prevailing situation, he said.
Pakistan’s attempted attack triggers high alert
The security measures were prompted by Pakistan’s failed missile assault targeting key Indian Air Force bases. Although successfully intercepted by Indian defences, loud explosions were reported across Jammu, Pathankot, and Udhampur, alarming residents.
Punjab: Schools closed in six districts
Punjab, which shares a 532-km border with Pakistan, is on high alert. The state government has:
Shut down schools in six border districts: Ferozepur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Tarn Taran.
Cancelled police leave
Imposed blackouts in border zones including Amritsar, Pathankot, and Chandigarh
Punjab Cabinet Minister Aman Arora said, “The Punjab government’s role becomes crucial in any military tension scenario.”
Haryana and Delhi cancel official leave
Neighbouring Haryana has cancelled leaves for police and health officials, directing all personnel to remain at their district headquarters.
In Delhi, the government has:
Cancelled leave for all employees
Launched district-level preparedness drills
Reviewed health and disaster readiness with DMs
Rajasthan shuts schools in western districts
Rajasthan, which shares over 1,000 km of border with Pakistan, has:
Closed schools in five western districts (names not specified)
Imposed blackouts from 9 PM to 4 AM in Barmer, Jaisalmer, and Jodhpur
Declared a red alert in Sri Ganganagar
Suspended flight operations at Bikaner, Kishangarh, and Jodhpur airports until 10 May
Banned drone flights and firecrackers
Gujarat: Coastal security tightened
In Gujarat, which shares both land and maritime borders with Pakistan:
Police leave has been cancelled
Surveillance has been intensified along the coastline, especially in Jamnagar, Morbi, and Devbhumi Dwarka
Locals have been asked to report suspicious activities in boat landing zones and remote coastal areas.
