Bihar has a new Chief Minister for the first time from the BJP. Samrat Choudhary’s oath marks a major political shift after Nitish Kumar’s exit—here’s what changes now.
Patna: Samrat Choudhary was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar on Wednesday, becoming the first leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to hold the post in the state.
Governor Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain (retd) administered the oath of office and secrecy.
The ceremony was attended by leaders of the NDA alliance, including the BJP, Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) and allied parties. Union Ministers J P Nadda and Chirag Paswan were present, along with all NDA MLAs.
Nitish Kumar stepped down as Chief Minister a day earlier and dissolved his cabinet. Choudhary, who served as Deputy Chief Minister and held the home portfolio, was named NDA’s choice for the top post.
Choudhary joined the BJP in 2017 and was elected legislative party leader ahead of the swearing-in, in the presence of BJP leaders including Shivraj Singh Chouhan and party president J P Nadda.
