Kolkata: The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF), the main group representing junior doctors, warned the state government on Friday night that they would resume their complete strike if their demands related to the rape and murder of a female junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata are not met by October 21.

Debasish Halder, a representative of WBJDF and a leading voice in the movement, told reporters that they felt forced to take this action because the state government has not shown the necessary compassion in addressing their concerns.

“If the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee does not accept our demands by Monday, from Tuesday we will be forced to go for total cease-work at medical colleges & hospitals from Tuesday,” Halder said on Friday night. He announced this decision after a meeting between the junior and senior doctors. “The decision was only after consultation with their senior colleagues,”  said Halder.

He also announced plans for a large rally on Saturday, starting from the victim's home in Panihati, North 24 Parganas, to Esplanade, where junior doctors are currently holding a hunger strike.

Halder invited the public to join the rally and mentioned that protest demonstrations would take place at every medical college and hospital across the state, both public and private, in support of their demands.

Earlier, Sayantani Ghosh Hazra, a junior doctor from K.P.C. Medical College and Hospital and one of the six doctors on hunger strike at Esplanade since October 5, questioned how the Chief Minister could focus on Durga Puja celebrations while many junior doctors are suffering from hunger strikes. “Does not she have any sense of humanity? Could she not visit us just once and assure us of fulfilling our demands” Sayantani said.
