New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries Ravneet Singh Bittu resigned from the Narendra Modi-led Union government on Friday. His resignation was accepted by President Droupadi Murmu with immediate effect.
The timing of the resignation has drawn attention as Punjab is set to go to Assembly polls in 2027. Sources suggest Bittu is likely to shift his focus towards state politics and could play a bigger role in the BJP’s election strategy.
Bittu’s Rajya Sabha tenure had also ended in June 2026, which added to speculation about his next political move.
BJP’s Punjab challenge
The resignation comes at a time when the BJP is preparing for a major electoral push in Punjab. The party, which contested the 2022 Assembly elections separately and won only a limited number of seats, is looking to expand its presence in the state.
Bittu has emerged as one of the BJP’s prominent Sikh leaders after joining the party in 2024. His political background and family legacy, including being the grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, have made him an important figure for the party’s outreach in the state.
From Congress MP to BJP’s Punjab face
Bittu was a three-time Congress MP before joining the BJP in March 2024. He contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Ludhiana on a BJP ticket but lost to Congress leader Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.
Despite the defeat, he was inducted into the Union government as a Minister of State in 2024 and was later nominated to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan.
His resignation now signals a possible shift from a national government role towards a more active role in Punjab politics.
What does the move mean for Punjab politics?
With the BJP planning to contest the next Punjab Assembly election without an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal, the party is expected to focus on building its own leadership structure in the state.
Bittu’s resignation could be part of that broader strategy, as the BJP attempts to strengthen its appeal among different sections of Punjab’s electorate, including Sikh, Hindu, Dalit and OBC communities.
