Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall in several southern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu until Sunday, driven by a low-pressure system influencing weather conditions across the region.

According to weather officials, the atmospheric disturbance currently stretches from southern Tamil Nadu to coastal Karnataka, creating favourable conditions for rainfall along the southern Tamil Nadu coast over the next few days.

Districts such as Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi are expected to experience intermittent showers beginning Tuesday and continuing until Sunday, according to the IMD forecast.

Meteorologists said the rainfall is likely to remain light in most places, although isolated moderate showers cannot be ruled out depending on local atmospheric conditions.

The rain-bearing system is expected to bring temporary relief from the prevailing dry weather in these coastal districts. However, the interior parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to remain largely dry during the same period.

Weather experts noted that the atmospheric circulation linked to the low-pressure system has increased moisture inflow from the sea, particularly affecting districts located along the southern coastline. As a result, these areas may experience cloudy skies and scattered rainfall over the coming days.

Meanwhile, the IMD has also predicted a slight rise in night temperatures across Tamil Nadu and the Karaikal region. Minimum temperatures are expected to increase by around 2 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average, indicating a mild warming trend during night hours.

In Chennai, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy for the next few days, though no significant rainfall activity has been forecast for the city.

The maximum temperature in Chennai is likely to hover around 34°C, which is considered normal for this time of the year.

Meteorologists said the evolving Tamil Nadu weather system is being closely monitored, and any changes in rainfall intensity or weather patterns will be communicated through updated forecasts and advisories.

Residents in southern coastal districts, particularly fishermen and coastal communities, have been advised to stay updated with official IMD bulletins, as changing sea and wind conditions may occur during the period of atmospheric instability.
